In my many years of mental health, I have learned that people deal with anger in various ways. For some people, it starts with a heated sensation in their stomachs. Yet others get an overwhelming quiet, smoldering feeling inside. When a person has an extreme response to anger, this can be one of the signs of anger issues. Because of some people’s negative reactions, anger is often seen as an unhealthy emotion.
This is not true, however. Anger is a healthy and normal emotion. Anger only becomes unhealthy when people with anger issues manifest their anger in some destructive manner.
So, what are the signs of anger management issues? What can you do if there are signs you have anger issues?
Signs You Have Anger Issues
I always tell friends and family that it is important not to bottle up their anger, otherwise, it could become uncontrollable. Managing your anger is critical to maintaining calm and control, and helps to ensure that your expressions of anger don’t have negative impacts on your personal relationships. The emotion of anger is entirely natural, and it is usual to feel angry when you’ve been mistreated or wronged.

When you don’t properly express your anger, it is suppressed and eventually expressed in outbursts which can be negative and harmful.
Fortunately, there are patterns of behavior that we can look out for in people with anger issues.
- Physical Expressions – Physical expressions of anger are perhaps the easiest to spot. Physical responses to anger include things such as craving certain substances, yelling or raising your voice, extreme sarcasm, and throwing things.
- Difficult To Expression Emotions – If you struggle with anger issues, it is often difficult to express your emotions in a healthy and calm manner. This makes it challenging to come to mutual agreements, especially when dealing with sensitive topics.
- Emotional Expressions – For other people, their anger can act as an emotional trigger. If you are someone who struggles with anger, you may find yourself feeling easily guilty, irritated, resentful, anxious, sad, and wanting to withdraw from the situation.
- Self-Harm & Isolation – If anger is bottled up inside for too long, it can cause you negative inward feelings such as self-harm and isolation. If you struggle with depression you are even more susceptible to these types of feelings and may eventually act on the desire to injure yourself.
- Sensitive To Triggers – Some addictions and personality disorders can trigger an unhealthy outburst. Alcohol, for example, can trigger anger and violence in some people.
- Substance Addiction & Abuse – You may have a strong urge to numb your anger by using substances. These act as a crutch that can easily lead to addiction and abuse. This abuse can lead to a worsening of your situation, making supportive alcohol and drug rehabilitation critical to your health.
- External Aggression – Physical violence, swearing, and shouting are all outward expressions of anger. These outbursts manifest in various forms of abuse.
- Relationship Struggles – If you are always shouting or constantly in an abusive disposition, then people won’t want to spend time around you. If you have anger management issues, then you may also have a history of unhealthy relationships.
Some people ask me if the signs of anger issues in a girl are the same as signs of anger issues in a man. The answer is that yes, they are. Both men and women can show any or all of the symptoms of anger management issues that we detailed above.
